Here’s the translation of the highlighted portion:

“Beautiful apartment including table and chairs. Wall closets. Breathtaking view. For Jews.”

Sort of like an ad in NYC saying “for whites”. But I thought East Jerusalem was Palestinian area. Stacy, there’s quite a bit I don’t know but I find your work here is helping to increase my knowledge, and my sadness.

I found this ad so upsetting, so offensive that it inspired me to sit down and write an email (attaching this story) to an old Psychiatry prof of mine at medical school who resigned from the American Psychiatric Association this winter because BishopTutu was invited to give the plenary address — you know, Bishop Tutu, the “anti-Semite,” who had the audacity to suggest there might be some parallels between Israel and aparteid South Africa. I asked my old Prof, “If this isn’t ethnic cleansing, what would you call it?”

@Carolyn-That’s good. This stuff has to come out of the closet and see the light of day. Israel is on a dangerous path and simply demonizing people who dare point that out, as your prof. seems to do, doesn’t help Israel. And there’s the real irony. The people who claim to be the most “pro-Israel” are the ones who are pushing Israel to become even more isolated than they are now. By rubber stamping every Israeli action and whim they are ensuring that there will never be two states and thus the alternative is full apartheid and constant conflict since most Jews seem to think living in a bi-national/inclusive country where ALL citizens have equal rights will mean the death of the [racist] Zionist dream.

I have a feeling I know what your prof is going to say- it’s what they all say in response to this- that forbidding Jews from living in certain areas (ie. Palestinian villages, etc.) is the REAL racism. Of course, that argument doesn’t pass the smell test. The purpose of having Jews settle in Occupied East Jerusalem is to remove all the Palestinians and ensure that in any eventual peace agreement, the territory remains in Israeli control.

Then they will bring up security, which is a straw man in areas of E. Jerusalem. Nobody is more concerned about NOT causing problems than Israeli Arabs and those that live in E. Jerusalem who may not be citizens of Israel. We’re not talking about Gaza.

There is a real question if Israel’s practices violate the International Declaration of Human Rights. Actually, there is no question- they do.

To my surprise, he responded almost immediately. I’m not going to disclose his name which isn’t really relevant but will just say he is a brilliant man who has written a lot of the best stuff on ethics in Psychiatry and was a personal hero. Now imagine how my heart sank, reading the following, especially the last line about Obama. I thought, “There really is no hope”:

        Thanks, Carolyn.
My resignation [from the American Psychiatric Assoc] was in part about the Tutu issue but more about the admin’s stonewalling of any dialogue, question, response, etc. as well as the long-standing failure of the APA to meet my needs as a member. Re mideast, I personally think that a two state solution is guaranteed to fail, and that the Palestinians do not want “peace”, they want Israel to be eliminated, but there are, I know, many views on this. I have been impressed at how much fiction is written about the situation over there (e.g., the “apartheid” canard), even in reputable media. It is unclear how this will all shake out, esp. with Obama’s waffling on this and making connections with the Muslim Brotherhood, etc. We will have to see.

They can sugar coat it all they want. Racism is racism is racism no matter what the history of the racist is.

In the yesterday’s Guardian, Rachel Corrie’s mother slams the U.S. “collusion” in the Gaza blockade.

      Yeah, and she’s right.

The State Dept for two administrations has overseen the total whitewash of the Israeli murder of Corrie, so I am sure this is all just rubbing salt in the parent’s wound.

There are so many examples of the US putting Israel’s propaganda needs over the rights of US citizens that have been killed and wounded by the IDF. Most of the time we don’t even hear about it. Right wing Israelis and some in this country refer to Rachel as St. Pancake.

@Carolyn- That’s difficult, but given his stance on Tutu it probably wasn’t a complete surprise, as disappointing as it was. But of course, this is a very personal issue for many people, particularly Jewish people, which I’m going to go out on a limb and assume he is.

Some people just don’t want to admit that the situation has changed drastically and Israel in fact is quite safe. It’s not 1930 anymore and the balance of power has shifted drastically- and that’s a good thing, but it serves no purpose to act as though the diaspora faces the same threat it did prior to the Holocaust.

Regarding his response, he seems rather uninformed- I’ve found that it’s not uncommon to find that sometimes the people that hold the strongest views about Israel really don’t know much other than vague talking points. I think they are afraid if they delve too deeply into it they might find something which challenges their version of what is happening.

Everything he says in that paragraph you quote sounds like our Fourth of July conversation at Micah’s parents house. Verbatim. Is he Micah’s father? Her father is a psychiatrist too. Hmmm…

But everything he said is so easily rebutted- for example, the entire Arab League agreeing to normalize relations with Israel if there was a just 2 state solution based on 1967 borders, the PA recognizing Israel in the 90’s, the fact that Israel’s own leaders have warned of Apartheid if a two state solution isn’t realized and the nonsense about the Muslim Brotherhood- they are certainly a very conservative strain of political Islam but they renounced violence and are the enemies of Al Qaeda. The administration is actually being very smart in opening a dialogue with them. Then there are the Palestine Papers which killed, once and for all, the myth promoted by Israel, the media and the U.S. government that “the Palestinians aren’t a true partner for peace.” But I bet he didn’t read any of the Palestine Papers.

The fact that he talks about the “fiction” regarding Israel even in “reputable media” is interesting given the example you showed him is from an Israeli paper, yet he doesn’t seem to respond to that. How is it then a “fiction?” Does he think Jew-only rentals and housing is racist? He doesn’t seem to tell you.

One of the most troubling aspects of what is going on in Israel is that I think that if things continue as they are currently- not only will Israel face growing isolation and very real security threats but the Jewish community around the world is going to suffer too. There are political, ethical and moral consequences to rationalizing this sort of inhumane treatment of other people. Anything can be rationalized based on security but at what cost to what Israel supposedly stands for? That’s why I continue to believe that the people who are truly pro-Israel are the ones who are speaking out and calling attention to all of this.

Tell your friend that there is only one thing delegitimizing Israel and that’s Israel. Their policies are radicalizing people and turning people against them.

He’s an ethicist and psychiatrist? Not too self aware is he?

The fact that he didn’t respond to the subject matter of your email to him- the Jews only apartment ad is so typical of all the Israel Firsters. They just keep their heads up their asses and think the problem is everyone ELSE. The entire world just woke up one day and decided to hate them!!! Oh my God, life is so unfair!

You see that’s the problem. The whole “it’s not racism or wrong when we do it” thing is kinda responsible for most of the worst crimes against humanity including the Holocaust. Irony alert.

Do you know that Christianity is correct? The world around us reveals that G-d DOES exist, and the historical evidence reveals that Jesus Christ really did come to this earth and there is overwhelming evidence that Jesus Christ really did physically rise from the dead. Jesus is coming again and the signs of the end times that were foretold in the Bible are coming to pass.
